An introduction to 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu

An introduction to 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu

History

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu was started by Eddie Bravo who is a Blackbelt under Jean Jacques Machado, one of the five Machado brothers. Jean Jacques is a Blackbelt under Carlos Gracie. Eddie had success in high-level competition - most notably in ADCC 2003 No-Gi when he fought Royler Gracie who was favored by a wide margin against Eddie (who was a Brownbelt at the time). In an exciting match Eddie was able to submit Royler with a triangle (with Joe Rogan on the side cheering!). Eddie then returned to California and received his Blackbelt from Jean Jacques. Next, he started looking into ways to evolve Jiu Jitsu for MMA because the Guard, while effective in the beginning of MMA/UFC, was no longer as effective. Jean Jacques inspired Eddie with his strong clinch technique using underhooks and overhooks. Eddie also decided that naming each position was critical to teaching consistently.

Evolving Jiu Jitsu

In looking to evolve Closed Guard he developed and named a new guard game called the “Rubber Guard” which is essentially a high closed guard and clinch system with paths and options that contain numerous submissions such as:

  • Rubber Guard “Main path” to Omaplata
  • Meat hook to triangle and gogo clinch
  • Main path to reverse triangle to triangle to armbar
  • Dead Orchard (two arms triangle with arm bar)
  • Haselett
  • Death from below
  • ...and more

Eddie also improved half guard by developing the “Lockdown” game that leads to sweeps and submissions such as Electric Chair, Dogfight + sweep, and more.

This evolution of jiu jitsu caught the attention of several MMA fighters such as Tony Ferguson (UFC Lightweight Champion 2017), Ilima-Lei Macfarlane (Bellator Flyweight Champion), Ben “Killa B” Saunders, Alan Belcher, Matt Horwich, and Vinny Magalhaes.

Eddie and the 10th Planet system have also been inspired by jiu jitsu greats such as Marcelo Garcia, Danaher Death Squad, and champions who have shown their “lejitsu” works in competition.

10th Planet Warm-Ups

To teach new students and to drill movement, we have the “10th Planet Warm-Ups” which are pre-choreographed flows that interconnect. Several of the warm up categories include: granby’s, pressure passing, standing passing, top half-guard, bottom half-guard, butterflies, and open guard.

Eddie Bravo and Royler Gracie Rematch Metamoris 3

The video below is from the Joe Rogan show. Joe Rogan is a Blackbelt in the 10th Planet system under Eddie Bravo. The video shows the second jiu jitsu match between Eddie and Royler Gracie in Metamoris 3. Eddie explains how he used the lockdown game to control his opponent and put him into a leglock submission. It is a fun video to watch and should provide an interesting introduction into our system. Enjoy!
